Harmony Korine

Harmony Korine had an auspicious start to his movie career when he was discovered by photographer Larry Clark and subsequently commissioned to write the screenplay for Clark's first feature film, Kids. Korine's directorial debut, Gummo, was released to an unsuspecting public one year later, drawing praise, disgust and bafflement.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is an electronic artist who work explores the intersections between new technologies, urban spaces, active participation, and what he calls "alien memory".

In his most famous piece, Vectorial Elevation, eighteen tele-robotic searchlights were placed on the rooftops of buildings surrounding Zocalo Plaza, the public square of Mexico City. By using a web-accessible interface that provided control of the searchlights, members of the general public were provide the means to design immense outdoor light sculptures. Initially commissioned as part of Mexico's celebration of the arrival of the new millennium, subsequent versions of the project have been presented in Dublin and Lyon.

Michael Awad

Architect and photographer Michael Awad, is best known for his arresting photographs which selectively capture elements that are in motion and leave static elements unrecorded. This work has been exhibited as part of Substitute City at the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery and represented Canada at the 2002 Venice Architectural Biennale as part of Next Memory City. Awad was recently commissioned to create a piece entitled Rush Hour for The Schulick Business School at York University. A solo exhibition, entitled Five Cities, of Awad's experimental urban photography including a new piece commissioned by the City of Chicago is currently being exhibited at The Chicago Cultural Centre from December 17 to February 17, 2005.

Shu Lea Cheang

January 14th, 2005

Recognized internationally as a pioneer in the field of digital art, Shu Lea Cheang began her career working with activist media collective Paper Tiger TV and Deep Dish TV. She developed a distinctive effects-based video-editing style and began producing art for the internet. In 1999 her installation entitled Brandon: A One Year Narrative Project in Installments became one of the first netart pieces to be commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum.

Her recent projects have included I.K.U., a feature length cyber-sex science-fiction film which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and Garlic=Rich Air, a netart project investigating material-based social networks which was presented in the "Zone of Urgency" at the 2003 Venice Biennale.
